Many of our staff, students, and community members commented on what a great experience the day was. Special thanks to Kelly Flanagan, Kathy Mondich, and Sindy Couch for helping to organize and coordinate projects to make this day possible! It's so nice to give back to our supportive community!

Selkirk School District is always considering long-term facilities options, but we are just at the beginning of a new (old) concept. Nothing has been finalized so there is little to share in terms of a public meeting but based on some Facebook speculation, we felt it was important to get out the basic facts, so here they are:
Long-term Facilities is not an agenda item at the March board meeting, but ANYTIME community members have questions I would encourage them to reach out to a source of information: school board members, the superintendent, or other staff. The work to modernize our buildings and build a quality education program has been ongoing for years. Any plan that we move forward with is not something that would happen overnight and there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to get the facts and share input.
Specifically, we have worked hard over the past 10 years to leverage grants, Seattle City Light impact fees, and state-matching money to create an opportunity for our community to upgrade our buildings that would NOT require a new tax or bond. That is a pretty amazing option and unheard of as generally a tax bond is required to build a building! Every other district around us (and across the state) has relied on taxes to build school buildings, but that would NOT be the case for Selkirk!!
The most efficient use of our funds for modernizing our campuses includes consolidating our students on the high school campus. All of the other Panorama B-sized school districts except one are located on a consolidated campus so we have lots of examples of how this can be done well! In past explorations of this idea, the plans to move the elementary to the Selkirk High School campus have always included an elementary wing separate from high school. We would continue with that idea, but a single campus would maximize safety, security, health, and educational opportunities!
In April the board will interview architect firms and task the firm with drawing plans by August that would include many of the details we need, but within the budget of funds we have collected. We do not want to design something so extravagant that it would exceed our budget. Once the architects start, they would meet with staff to gather education specifications (to build classrooms that meet teachers’ needs) and then there would be community meetings to provide information, answer questions, and gather feedback on the conceptual plan with the goal of staying within the budget we have created with grants, impact fees, and state-match. By August, we would know if this was even a real possibility for our community. If it is, then there would still be a full year of finalizing plans. The timeline would be something like breaking ground in summer 2026 and finishing in 2028 if this were to happen. This is a long-term concept but requires some exploration up front. It is also amazing that we might be able to provide a modernized high school with new classrooms spaces for TK-5 (around $31 million dollars total) with NO NEW TAX!
Rest assured we will keep everyone posted via newsletters and Facebook whenever there is a public meeting on the planning project. In the meantime, however, just reach out with questions, but remember details have not been finalized because this is just the exploration stage! I do have faith in our staff, school board, and community that if we move forward with this plan, we will create an amazing space for kids to learn and grow!

The Selkirk Theatre Arts program will be presenting its spring plays at the Cutter Theatre this Saturday! Performances are at 2pm & 7pm. Selkirk’s talented actors and actresses have been working hard and practicing late to bring their characters to life in two comedic tales. The middle school play, “The Ever After”, features a cheesy talk show host who invites traditional fairy tale characters to reconcile their differences on live television. Can Snow White and the Evil Queen be friends? Come find out! In the high school play, “The Search for Delicious”, the cast recreates a mythical medieval kingdom in the midst of a fierce disagreement over the most “delicious” food. Follow the crazy adventures of the cast as they attempt to define delicious and avoid a civil war. Don’t miss these hilarious performances! See you Saturday!
